ESR dumps Fedora, yay!

February 21, 2007

Eric S. Raymond (ESR) is a one of my favorite open source characters. I say "character" because the open source community and it's politics can seem like a bit of a soap opera at times. Linus said so-and-so about Gnome, or RMS revised the soon to be GPLv3 (again), etc.

ESR calls it like he sees it, everytime. With so much crap on the 'net, that is something to be respected.

I have to admit I'm a little dismayed at how long it took him for this particular action. Long story short, ESR dumped Fedora in favor of Ubuntu. I did that several years ago myself. Except when I did it I dumped RedHat 6? for Debian. I like new software, but I also like for my machine to work across minor security updates! Honestly I don't care for any of the RPM-based distros at this point. Apt has always seemed a more sane choice for binary package management.

Anyway.. way to go ESR! You tell them!
