Debian is the one

October 31, 2005

After many years of using lots of popular (and some unpopular) Linux distros, I believe I have decided on a new favorite. I say 'new' mostly because I've had quite a few favorites already. Gentoo held my attention for a couple of years and in my early years of using Linux, Red Hat was my pick.

Debian is rock solid and very polished. It has well-written package management tools and provides many, many packages you can 'net install with just a few keystrokes. Apt and dpkg are powerful tools for package management and if you only find a package available in RPM format, you can use alien to install it as a deb package.

The community support for Debian is unrivaled by any other distro I've ever used. There are so many Debian how to documents out there, one can't help but find specific details for any sort of Linux related task.

I still use FreeBSD for my Firewall/NAT, but who knows, I may even replace that with a Debian box at some point.
